The Karoonda Development Group Inc is a not for profit community development group.  It has a role in improving both the lifestyle and the business capacity of the community.  All members are volunteers and contribute their time to help the Karoonda Community move forward.
Recent projects include establishment of this website, the Karoonda 'image' project, IT Training for the community, establishment of a official Weather station, main street amenity upgrades, auspicing various funding applications, arguing for better TV coverage, the New Years Eve street party, funding a youth housing discussion paper and the Christmas lights program.  The current office bearers of the group can be contacted via the local council on (08) 85781004.
The Karoonda Development Group would like to acknowledge Karoonda Area School for their role in producing the website. Linda Paech (Administration Officer) with valuable assistance from Trevor Wohlfeil, Martin Morgan (Year 10), Toni Neumann and  Ashleigh Rosenzweig (Year 9) produced the website.  Trevor and Martin were responsible for taking photos of the businesses and Toni and Ashleigh coordinated the clerical aspect of the task.  The students were assessed on their involvement with the project and they often worked during lunch/recess breaks to complete the project.  The school was paid $1000 to develop the site and maintain it for 12 months.  The school purchased a colour printer which has already been put to good use by both staff and students.

History of the Community
Karoonda means in aboriginal "Winter Camp".
Scattered stone tools found, indicate Aboriginal occupation over a long period by the Ngarkte tribe which had died out by the time pastoralists took up leases from 1860.
The Karoonda township lies on land once part of Chucka Bend Station, several wells and shepherds huts are all that remains of this era.  The only complete homestead Moorlands Station, was demolished in 1986 for a shed site.
District income centres around farming - cereal crops, sheep and some cattle. The local merino lambs have a high reputation.
No surface water exists but good stock water from bores drilled to approximately sea level. At sea level abundant marine fossils exist from the ancient sea bed.
Other unique events in Karoonda history include :-
